KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A local school yard garden is producing big results for its community. Behind Benjamin Bannecker Charter Academy of Technology (BBCAT) sits a garden with 21 flower beds full of fruits and vegetables. Since the garden was created in 2008, its mission has focused on feeding the homeless. To date, more than 2,300 pounds of fresh produce has been donated to Harvesters Community Food Network.
Keimon Washington, a seventh grader and co-head gardener of the Green Griots Community Garden says he got involved to be healthier and help out the community.
“It makes me feel good. I have something healthy to do and working together with others,” said Washington.
The garden is run by the students BBCAT with the help of volunteer James Williams.
“When daylight comes, I rush to the garden,” said Williams.
The Green Griots Community Garden is also taking part in the 2013 Urban Grown Farms and Gardens Tour on June 22 – 23.
