1) DESPICABLE ME 2 (PG)

Universal Pictures

RUSS: Reformed super villain Gru and his lovable minions return in “Despicable Me 2,” a worthy sequel to the 2010 animated favorite. The filmmakers have packed the movie with clever sight gags, making good use of 3-D technology. Plus, the script has charm and good humor to spare and fun songs by Pharrell Williams. Stick through the closing credits from some additional minion mayhem.

Shawn says it’s on par with the first but those Minons do get a bit annoying after a while but the kids will love them and this movie. And adults there is a surprisingly sophisticated thread that runs through the movie.

2) FAST AND FURIOUS 6 (PG-13)

Universal Pictures

RUSS: In a sad twist of fate, “Fast and Furious 6” arrives just days after the passing of its star Paul Walker. Universal Pictures has pledged that a portion of the proceeds will go to Walker’s charity, “Reach Out Worldwide,” an organization that helps in disaster relief, including aiding victims of the recent typhoon in the Philippines.

The five previous movies in the “Fast & Furious” franchise have pulled in over $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office. With its concentration on goofy over-the-top action, “Fast & Furious 6” added quite a few more dollars to that tally.

This franchise has evolved from a story about street racers into a comic book variation of a James Bond flick. It’s appropriate that The Rock is one of the “Furious” stars, because, like WWF wrestling, there isn’t a believable moment in it…but it’s still mindless fun.

Shawn says: The entertainment value more than mask the movie’s many obvious flaws. But when it comes to this franchise the cinematic sins are easily forgiven. But despite all this franchise just keeps getting better, more exciting and more compelling.

3) THE HUNT (R)

Magnolia Pictures

RUSS: “The Hunt” is an excellent Danish film that depicts a nightmare scenario. Mads Mikkelsen from TV’s “Hannibal” stars as a teacher who’s falsely accused of sexually abusing a child. Thomas Vinterberg’s gripping movie shows that good intentions, when fueled by fear, can lead to injustice. It’s one of the best foreign language films of the year. Expect Oscar to notice.
