(HLNtv.com) — A little boy in Harlingen, Texas, has decided to pull from his own birthday gift stash to help other kids in his community this holiday season.
“There are children who don’t have toys, so I wanted to give them my toys,” Santos Gonzalez told HLN affiliate KGBT.
The second-grader says he gave up his new Angry Birds puzzle and LEGO Stars Wars set. He was inspired after hearing that donations to Toys for Tots have been sluggish in the area, according to Capt. Kelly Candies with the Marines, which run Toys for Tots programs across the nation.
“It’s always a good thing when anyone in the community donates. And to have a young man like this do this for his community, it speaks volumes,” Candies told HLN.
Candies also said the campaign in Harlingen is hoping to collect between 17,000 and 20,000 toys this year. Anyone in the area who is interested in donating can find a schedule of events and locations for drop centers by calling 956-425-9643. If you live outside the area, you can find a donation center near you on the Toys for Tots website.
Toys for Tots collects new, unwrapped toys in October, November and December. The initiative delivers those toys to children along with a “message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens.”
