LEAWOOD, Kan. — One year ago, three people were killed at Jewish-related centers in Overland Park. Monday, a number of tributes took place to honor the victims.
Doctor William Corporon and his grandson Reat Underwood were shot outside the Jewish Community Center. Terri LaManno was shot and killed outside Village Shalom retirement center.
Dozens attended a ceremony at the Church of the Resurrection and lit candles in honor of the victims. Among them was Tony Corporon, who lost his father and nephew in the shootings.
“Each of us, one-by-one can change our world and make it a better place. If we can carry that legacy from tonight for years going forward, then we’ve done a wonderful thing,” he said.
LaManno’s children talked about the year it has been in the aftermath of the shootings.
“Yesterday, it was the hardest for me because she was here but now she’s gone, but I have all the support from everybody,” Alissa LaManno said.
“We were able to turn tragedy into a show of love. We did not late hate win, it won’t ever win,” said Gian LaManno.
The ceremony concluded seven days of kindness to counter hatred.
