SHAWNEE, Kan. — A veteran member of the Shawnee Police Department was charged with violating a stalking order his ex-wife filed. Sergeant Bill Smith was arrested in Olathe Monday night and booked into the Johnson County jail.

He was charged with violating a protection order just hours after it was placed.

According to the victim’s attorney, Paul Morrison, there was ongoing contact between Smith and his ex since their divorce over the summer. He was repeatedly asked to stop contacting her, and finally Morrison said he and his client asked for the protection order.

Morrison said Smith violated the order several times by emailing his client. None of the emails were threatening in any way, but the order clearly stated “no contact”.

The charge is a misdemeanor, but it’s a domestic violence offense. Smith appeared in court Tuesday afternoon and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He is out on bond, but with specific conditions. He cannot have any contact with his ex or anyone involved in this investigation, no firearms except for work and he’s on house arrest with a GPS monitoring system.

He won’t have a need for the firearm exception, at least for now. The department confirmed to FOX 4 it put Smith on administrative leave. That was the only information they released by the department, saying it’s a personnel issue.
