SHAWNEE, Kan. — What do you remember most from the 90’s? This week the City of Shawnee unearthed a time capsule buried 25 years ago. The city revealed the mystery contents in a special ceremony Saturday.

The time capsule was buried in front of City Hall on January 13, 1990.

“They left a message for us here in 2015 that it should be re-opened and revealed to the citizens of Shawnee of 2015 to find out what was in it,”  said Dan Ferguson with the City of Shawnee.

Inside was a pair of old sneakers, a bottle of homemade wine, a Koosh ball, Polaroids, a happy meal and plenty of handwritten letters.

“It’s just really interesting to see how much the world has changed since 1990,” said Ferguson.

Retired Shawnee Police Sergeant Robert Brady was at City Hall when the time capsule was buried. He told FOX 4 he added a traffic ticket to the time capsule before it was put in the ground. Saturday he got it back.

Replacing the old time capsule is a new one-not to be opened for 50 years. It includes an iPhone, Taser, and gear from the Royals’ historic World Series run.

“In 50 years hopefully it will be in good shape and people can see what life was like today,” said Ferguson.

Who knows what life will be like then!
