CLAY COUNTY, Mo. — Shon Pernice has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the death of his wife, Renee Pernice, who was reported missing in January 2009. Her body has never been found.

Pernice’s plea came as a surprise Tuesday afternoon during an emergency hearing in Clay County. Pernice admitted arguing with Renee and hitting her in the head at which point she fell down the stairs.

Pernice faces five to 15 years in prison.
