KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A double shooting near a popular 24-hour grocery store in Westport has shoppers on edge.
Kansas City, Mo., police said the shooting happened in the parking lot of Sun Fresh Market on Mill Street just before 3 o’clock Sunday morning. Dozens of shoppers showed up just hours later.
“It’s definitely scary to think about because when you pull into this parking lot, you don’t think this could be a place where there’s going to be a shooting,” said shopper Tim Rosenthal.
Police said both victims were men in their 20s who later showed up at area hospitals. One of them was shot in the leg and the other remains in critical condition. Police believe a third person was also involved but have yet to find him or determine who fired a weapon(s).
“It’s very disturbing because I do come over here, and I come at night, and I come by myself,” said shopper Latrice Purnell.
The store’s manager declined an interview, but told FOX 4, “When the bars let out, that’s when the trouble begins,” referring to late-night party-goers who frequent the nearby bars and nightclubs.
“A lot of people (are) trigger happy, fight happy,” Purnell said.
As police work to make arrests, Purnell has a message for those behind the crime:
“You really don’t have to resort to violence,” she said. “Try walking away. Try solving it with words.”
