WESTON, Mo. — This is Snow Creek’s 28th season. You can do everything from tubing, to snowboarding to skiing, even if it’s not snowing in your own back yard.

“With the temperatures the way they are, anything below 28 degrees we can fire up all 77 of our snow guns and cover the whole entire hill,” said Darin Pond, with Snow Creek, “Just like mother nature does in a way!”

Snow Creek Ski Area started its annual snow-making Wednesday night around 5:30. The snow guns can make up to 12 inches of snow in 24 hours.

“People always ask what’s the difference between fresh snow and man-made snow,” Pond said, “For one, most resorts all across the country make snow these days so they can extend their season at it, we don’t get snow like we used to. You really cannot tell the difference, at all.”

Darin Pond says Snow Creek is one of a kind in the Kansas City area. It`s been around for 28 years.

“A lot of people still don’t even realize that we’re here!” he said.

They offer lessons for beginners to advanced.

“Our instructors go through the same training that instructors do in Colorado, Utah, California, or wherever else.”

Snow Creek is for all ages. You can tube, ski, and snowboard.

“And in this area, what else is there to do in December, January, and February?” he added, “A lot of people say, ‘Well, I like to go to Colorado, the runs are longer.’ Well, for one, there are no mountain roads to drive, so it’s quick and easy, It’s a half-an-hour, or 45 minutes from Kansas City depending on where you’re at.”

Snow Creek is officially open for business Saturday, December 14th, and it’s open until the second week in March. Even if you don’t want to drive long distances, you can still enjoy some winter sports.
