GLADSTONE, Mo. — Police asked officials at a Gladstone elementary school to lock down students and staff Friday afternoon after police heard a series of shots fired near the school. Late Friday afternoon, those students were removed in an orderly fashion from the school and moved to an undisclosed location to be reunited with their parents.
Police apprehended the suspect and ended an extended standoff shortly after 6 p.m. on Friday night after that person surrendered.
The lockdown was called for at Linden West Elementary school at 73rd and Broadway at about 1:30 p.m. after shots were reportedly fired at a home near 72nd and N. Wyandotte. While police were investigating, they heard another series of shots and a short time after that, more shots. Officers were trying to determine the source of the possible gunfire.
Gladstone Police, with the help of the Kansas City Police Dept. cordoned off the neighborhood and set up a command post at 72nd and N. Wyandotte at the Bargain Barn Furniture Store.
Mary Jo Burton with the North Kansas City School District said the lock down was precautionary and in response from a request from Gladstone police.
Burton said all students were fine and the parents were notified of the situation. The school is normally released at 4:10 p.m.
