KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A rising number of robberies and violence in South Kansas City has businesses on high alert. At least ten businesses have been robbed over the past few weeks.
Sonic Restaurant at 104th & Blue Ridge was robbed on January 6. Two robbers burst into the restaurant, guns drawn and pistol whipped an employee after she handed them money from the safe. Now, many businesses are taking action.
About a mile away, workers at a Chinese restaurant take time away from serving customers to add a new security system. They also added steel bars to the windows. On Christmas night, two men smashed through the restaurant’s front door and robbed them. The heightened alert at the restaurant is common at businesses at the same strip mall at Blue Ridge & Longview Rd.
The recent robberies also include a couple of Church’s Chicken restaurants nearby. Police believe the same two people are behind at least ten robberies in the vicinity starting in December of 2011.
The FBI is now helping police because the violence during the robberies is escalating.
“I’ve been kind of nervous sometimes when some people come in,” Chang said.
The robbery spree leaves many workers keeping an eye on who’s coming through their doors. Business owners hope their extra security precautions will prevent another violent attack.
