KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Most everyone has heard about the Big 12 Championship, but there was another game on Saturday, outside of the Sprint Center, which caught the attention of the crowd.
Before fans watched Iowa State win the Big 12 Championship title on Saturday, some parents got to watch their kids be a part of something they say they’ll never forget.
It’s a special moment for Dianna Neilhouse. Her daughter, Jennifer, has Down’s syndrome and doesn’t have as many opportunities to play as other teens her age.
“It’s just really fun. It’s fun to see her enjoy things and do what she loves,” said Neilhouse.
The Special Olympics puts kids with disabilities in a tournament every year in the middle of the Big 12.
“This gives them a sense of they’re part of the show too. It’s really good for them,” she said.
Not only does it give parents a chance to watch their kids play, it shows everyone around that they’re not as different as they think.
“I think it’s an amazing opportunity for the world to understand that kids with disabilities can do a whole lot more than most people think they can,” said Neilhouse.
