OLATHE, Kan. — Vanya Shivashankar, a sixth-grader at California Trail Middle School in Olathe, is headed to Washington D.C. for the Scripps National Spelling Bee on May 26.

But before her trip, she came to visit the FOX 4 Morning team and quizzed them on some words.

Shivashankar won the Olathe district’s spelling bee last year, too. The winning word then was “cloche”. Click here for the definition from dictionary.com.

This year’s winning word in the Olathe district contest was ‘maladroit’. It s an adjective which means ‘awkward.’

The second place win went to Anna Ramasamy of Woodland Elementary School.

In 2009, Vanya’s sister, Kayia won the national title as an eighth grader. Good luck, Vanya! You got this!
