OLATHE, Kan. — Authorities say that spontaneous combustion was to blame for a fire that caused an estimated $10,000 damage at Olathe East High School on Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were called to the school at 14545 W. 127th Street around 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning, where they found a small fire against the brick exterior of the building near a service area at the back of the school.

According to fire investigators, the blaze was started when when trash bags containing lacquer-laden sawdust spontaneously combusted. The sawdust was created and discarded when contractors removed the floor finish from the school’s basketball court.

There were no injuries reported in the fire.
