KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Before the Royals took the field on Friday night, folks swarmed “The Little-K” to check out a Whiffle Ball tournament. Look closely at the players many of them you seen before.
Local celebrities Paul Rudd, Rob Riggle and Jason Sudekis joined other celebs like actress Sarah Chalke and daredevil Johnny Knoxville for a charity match.
“The opportunity to help anyone is very important. To have it be something where we get to have so much fun and provide for Kansas Citians it makes it all the more special,” Sudekis said.
This Whiffle Ball tournament is part of a weekend of event benefiting Children’s Mercy Hospital’s Cancer Center. Kids often end up in there care, after their primary doctors can no longer help them. Last year’s event alone brought in about $500,000 to help those kids.
“I sat there earlier and was thanking them for coming and they were like thank you for letting us come,” Jake Jacobson, Media Relations Manager for Children’s Mercy, said. “As soon as they visit the hospital and start to hear some of the stories, they realize while this is all a very fun weekend, it it’s going to a serious cause.”
Folks clicked shots of their favorite celebrities, but it was clear that this little guy was the real star. It was seven-year-old Bryson who threw out the first pitch. He’s a cancer survivor who was first diagnosed at only age four.
The event is in its fourth year, and organizers hope the metro will keep showing their support, for the little ones who need them.
“I know we couldn’t do it without the enthusiasm from people in Kansas City and our various sponsors along with the people who eventually help us out with people who bid on things for the auction. We raise a lot of money,” Sudekis said.
