BOONE COUNTY, Mo. – Democrat Jeremy LaFaver, who represents Missouri’s 25th District in Kansas City, was arrested for possession of marijuana (up to 35 grams) and possession of drug paraphernalia after the Missouri Highway Patrol pulled LaFaver over for outstanding traffic warrants on Sunday.
LaFaver had two outstanding warrants for traffic offenses in Moniteau County according to an online arrest report from the highway patrol. LaFaver was booked into the Boone County jail and released after posting $125 bond according to the sheriff’s log.
He apologized in a written statement obtained by FOX 4 that read in part:
“I made a serious mistake, I apologize for it, and I am prepared to face the consequences of my behavior…I deeply regret the embarrassment I have caused my family and the people of the 25th District by this incident.”
The Missouri Republican Party released a statement asking for LaFaver to resign. In the statement on its Web site, party spokesman Matt Wills said that LaFaver has broken people’s trust with a ‘direct and open disrespect for the law and courts.’
LaFaver told the Kansas City Star that he is not going to resign. However, he did say that he’s resigning his position as chair of the House Democratic Victory Committee in the statement he released.
