KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Superstorm Sandy is going into the record books.
It’s expected to be the second-costliest tropical cyclone in the nation’s history, behind Hurricane Katrina in 2005, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Sandy was blamed for 72 deaths in the United States, making it the deadliest cyclone outside of the southern states in 40 years.
The storm battered the Northeast.
More than 300,000 homes in New York were damaged or destroyed.
In New Jersey, Sandy damaged or destroyed more than 346,000 homes.
Meteorologists classify hurricanes, tropical storms and tropical depressions as tropical cyclones.
