JOPLIN, Mo. — Nearly a year after a devastating EF-5 tornado tore a swath of destruction through the heart of the city, a Joplin hospital has released surveillance footage of the tornado as it tore through the hospital’s emergency room waiting area.
St. John’s Mercy Hospital took a direct hit from the deadly tornado on May 22, 2011. The facility was a complete loss. and demolition of the wrecked hospital began in January.
A new hospital – called Mercy Hospital Joplin – opened in April.
The tornado killed 161 people and caused around $2.8 billion in damages.
