LOS ANGELES — It’s straight out of science fiction.  It’s the watch Hollywood has been imagining for years.

Now Samsung’s Galaxy Gear Smart Watch is on the market.  But should you get one?

No doubt you’ve seen the television commercials which promise a gadget straight from the realm of science fiction.

It looks cook and it’s comfortable to wear.  There’s a small, but bright touch screen, a two megapixel camera and a reassuring snap. It’s water resistant — water proof would be better.

At its core, the gear is a watch and it’s greatt for getting useful info at a glance.  There are several preloaded apps.  Plus, you can add more.

Making quick calls is easy using S-Voice, Samsung’s version of Siri

Gear has a neat feature where the screeen comes to life when you lift your arm.  It’s intuitive like that.  It’s a fun addition to your wrist, but with a $300 price tag, it’s not exactly a must have.

Taking pictures from your wrist like a spy is novel, but there aren’t many times you’ll need to do that.  Seeing who’s texting for calling convenient, but it might not make you look at your phone screen any less, because not all notifications are supported.

Indeed the future is here, the device does what it says.  But it’s an expensive and sometimes cumbersome way to live out a childhood dream.

Gear doesn’t work on its own.  You need a Samsung Android phone to pair with it.  At this point, it does not work with the iPhone and it might never.
