OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — An Overland Park teenager will face trial as an adult for a fatal drunk driving crash that killed a father of four in the summer of 2014.

Connor Estrella, 17, is charged with involuntary manslaughter and aggravated battery for the crash that killed 52-year-old Kevin Moroney and injured Moroney’s girlfriend Maureen Hogg.
On August 7, 2014, Moroney was walking Hogg to her car just before midnight when neighbors near his house on Tomahawk Road described hearing a horrific sound. When they went outside, Moroney’s body was in one yard, Hogg’s was in another. Several people rushed to help, and started CPR on Maroney, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Prosecutors say Estrella was on probation and violated his curfew the night he drove drunk. Moroney’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Estrella and his parents. It alleges they were negligent in providing their son with a car.
In the lawsuit, they named other incidents in which Estrella was in legal trouble, including a Sept. 13, 2013, arrest for battery; an Oct. 15, 2013, arrest for drug paraphernalia; a probation period for the battery charge that began on Nov. 14, 2013, which the teenager violated on two occasions when he tested positive for THC and was arrested for having alcohol on school property; and a new six-month probation beginning on April 14, 2014, after his initial probation was revoked.
The teen’s home is just three and a half blocks from the crash scene.
