DE SOTO, Kan. — Band of Angels strikes again. This time, surprising a 14-year-old with a trombone. The freshman has autism and Asperger syndrome and said music changed his life.
Jason Mishler applied for an instrument with the FOX 4 Band of Angels Charity which provides instruments to students who need them. In his application, it described how music gave him a voice.
Up until four years ago, the freshman at DeSoto High School couldn’t speak. Then he found band, symphonies, and words.
“I went from a padded room in elementary to a full classroom in high school,” he said.
Mishler needed an instrument to play in the jazz ensemble. He initially wanted a tuba, but Band of Angels didn’t have that instrument, so it provided a trombone instead.
“I’m really proud of him because this will be his fifth instrument that he’s taught himself how to play,” said mom Deania Mishler with tears in her eyes.
Mishler learns everything by ear and is working on reading sheet music.
Wish music by his side, Mishler said he can overcome anything.
