GALVESTON, Tex. — Even though sharks have a bad reputation, a Texas boy has some shark tales that any fisherman would love to share. Nine-year-old Hunter Stevens and his dad caught a shark recently while kayak fishing off the cost of Galveston, Texas.
The young fisherman says he’s not intimidated by sharks.
“I know that they won’t hurt you unless you do something bad to them,” Stevens said.
Hunter has caught a shark before. The last one he captured was 5 feet long. His dad helped him secure the line. In August of 2011, Hunter and his dad hooked a 7 foot shark. In both cases, they threw the fish back in the water after celebrating their accomplishments. The big fish are showing up a little earlier this year according to Texas Parks and Wildlife.
“We’re getting runs from sharks, probably a month earlier than last year,” said Mike Fischer with Texas Parks and Wildlife.
Mark Fisher with Texas Parks and Wildlife says they are noticing sharks swimming closer to shore earlier than usual. They’re enjoying the unseasonably warm water temperatures it’s all giving this father and son a thrill as they make big plans for more catches this season.
