KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A center, dedicated to the disabled, gets a new home.
The Sherwood Center specializes in helping children and adults with autism and other disabilities. The program had been running out of a building at 79th and Prospect, but it was quickly running out of room.
Instead it has moved to the old Calvary Lutheran School at 80th and Ward Parkway Plaza.
With more than 50 children ages three to 11 in attendance, and more than 20 adults, organizers say they’re lucky to have found the space. The old school just went on the market last summer, and now neighbors in the area are thankful the building isn’t sitting empty.
“The way that we acquire kids is we contract with school districts. So if the school district has a child who they feel like is no longer progressing in their school district, they contract with us to provide services for them. And we had really reached the point where we weren’t able to accept any more kids,” said Rachael Gordon, with the Sherwood Center.
The Sherwood Center is holding an open house Tuesday morning from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. All are welcome to attend.
