MISSION, Kan. — Some scary moments Tuesday morning when a car thief stole an animal rescue van filled with dogs.

These dogs were being loaded up in van at the Unleashed Pet Shelter in Mission, heading to the vet to be spayed and neutered.

The employee had the van running to keep the dogs warm and as she ran inside to grab another crate, someone jumped in and drove off – with four dogs inside.

About an hour later, a woman in KCK found the Unleashed van abandoned at 16th and Washington Avenue in KCK – with the dogs still inside.

“We were just extremely relieved to find them all in their kennels in the back of the van. Does seem to be injured didn’t seem to be injured or anything like that? I don’t think they messed with them at all,” Unleashed founder Danielle Reno said.

The thief hit something on the driver’s side, which caused damage, and the keys are not with the van.

Since they don’t have a spare, it’ll have to be towed and fixed.

They only have liability insurance, so the shelter will have to pay to get it fixed.
