KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A member of the Butera family is heading to the World Series regardless of who wins the ALCS.
Bragging rights are definitely on the line for the Butera family. Drew Butera is the back-up catcher for the Kansas City Royals, and his dad, Sal Butera, is a scout for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Father and son were crossing dug outs to share a pre-game laugh and maybe a little baseball knowledge before Saturday’s game. Sal Butera certainly knows his stuff, as a former Major league catcher who knows his way around the diamond playing for the Twins, Tigers, Expos, Reds and Blue Jays. Drew says it was cool to have a major leaguer as a dad, and even cooler to now play against him.
“It’s fun, it’s a cool experience to get to play against him and share these playoffs,” said Drew.
Get this, they even rode over to the stadium together, but believe or not they didn’t talk baseball.
“He’s still my dad, it’s not like I’m going to cut out all communications with him, we just didn’t talk about baseball,” said Drew. “[We talked about] golf or something I don’t remember.”
But he certainly remembers stories of his dad winning the World Series with the Minnesota Twins back in 1987. And so does mom, who’s watching her son and husband play against each other for a pennant. She’s happy because either way she gets to go to the World Series.
FOX 4’s Rob Collins asked Drew if he ever put on his dad’s World Series ring as a kid. And he responded by saying, “oh yeah, a bunch of times.”
Kansas City fans are hoping he earns a ring of his own in the next week or so.
