BELTON, Mo. — A big rivalry basketball game between Belton High School and Raymore-Peculiar will have extra security Friday night following a lockdown at Belton High.

School administrators say a student made a threat on the social media site Instagram against two other students. Police have since located the suspect and determined there is no remaining potential threat.

Administrators want to continue taking precautions despite the fact that the threat is non-existent. They would not say exactly what the threatening picture showed on Instagram, but it was enough to put the school on lockdown and send police searching for the student who posted it.

Every security threat is taken seriously according to the superintendent of Belton schools, and if that student were to act the entire student body could be at risk, so they responded accordingly to keep everyone safe.

“We want to have a safe environment for all of our kids, and it’s unfortunate in this day with all the different acts of violence that we’re seeing across the country, that people seem to jump to these types of reactions, when something bad goes on in their life,” Superintendent Andrew Underwood said.

“People have definitely been on edge, but I think our school definitely had it under control and were taking very good cautions of our safety,” one student said.

The lockdown was eventually lifted when police located the student at home, which is where they say he was all day. Police say they’ve talked with his parents and for now, no charges will be filed. But they did say the student is not allowed on school grounds until further notice.
