KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The best baristas in the nation came to Kansas City to determine who can make the best cup of Joe!

The regional championship for the Specialty Coffee Association of America was at the Crossroads on Friday. More than 35 coffee and espresso experts competed and displayed their excellent skills.

“The barista competition is kinda like a chef competition, in that a barista goes up, shows their skills and creates three different types of coffee drinks for a judging panel and gets scored. And the winner goes on,” said Fred Polzin, Co-founder of PT’s Coffee Company.

Polzin said the competition included competitors from 11 states, but also volunteer workers and people helping run the competition from states all over the country.

“I’d say we’re probably represented by at least half the states in the United States today,” he said.

Winners move onto Boston in April to compete at the United States Barista Championship.
