Look! Up in the sky! At the sun! Venus will be crossing paths with the big ball of fire Tuesday evening. It’s a spectacle that won’t take place again until Dec. 10, 2117. But in order to see it without causing damage to your eyes, you need to take precautions.
NASA suggests wearing No. 14 welder’s glasses. Other safety techniques suggested by NASA are listed here. If you don’t have glasses, telescopes or other means of watching safely, NASA will hold a live webcast starting at 4:45 CST.
For those in the Midwest, the best time to see the spectacle is between 5 and 5:15 p.m. Venus’ move between the sun and Earth is expected to take about six hours and 40 minutes.
“Don’t let the requisite warnings scare you away from witnessing this singular spectacle!” said NASA’s public outreach team. “You can experience the transit of Venus safely, but it is vital that you protect your eyes at all times with the proper solar filters.”
