KANSAS CITY, Mo. – People in KC joined hundreds of other cities across the country to rally in support of Trayvon Martin. The teenager was fatally shot in Sanford, Fla. by neighborhood watchmen George Zimmerman in February of 2012. Zimmerman was acquitted last week in a Florida courtroom of second-degree murder in Martin’s death.
With paper, pencil and cardboard signs, dozens met in downtown Kansas City on Saturday to raise their voices in hopes of having new charges brought against Zimmerman.
“It’s something positive to do, you know? Like there’s a lot of other way I’m sure a lot of us could be out expressing ourselves,” Sterling White, artist and Martin supporter, said.
Vigils were held with the intent to send a strong message to Washington D.C.: File a federal hate crime against Zimmerman.
“I think through the rallies it’s the communication that we really don’t stand for this type of what they’re calling justice…because when really, it’s not,” supporter Sean Antwine said.
Those who came said the discussion can’t end with the verdict.
“It’s not just Trayvon Martin, it’s for all the young black boys and men that he represents,” Ina Montgomery, vigil organizer, said.
So far, the justice department has pledged a full investigation. Those downtown said too many people are hurting and they won’t rest until they’re heard.
