CLAY COUNTY, Mo. — Two children under the age of five have been found dead near 92 Highway and Cameron Road, just east of Kearney, Mo.

The report came in shortly before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Officers arriving at the scene reportedly found the two children dead — both girls, both under the age of five. Police said the children are believed to be siblings.

Investigators said the children’s mother found them not breathing, and ran across the street to a neighbors house to call 911. There were no obvious signs of trauma to the children’s bodies, so it’s difficult to determine exactly how two kids so young in age died.

“No water has been involved. There’s definitely no firearms involved. We just don’t know exactly what happened. We’re trying to get search warrants right now to piece all of the pieces of the puzzle together,” Captain Will Akin of the Clay County Sheriff’s Department said.

The medical examiner is working to determine an exact cause of death. Meanwhile authorities hope a search warrant allows them to comb through the property and search for more clues about this puzzling and tragic death investigation.

“It’s a tragic situation where two children have lost their lives and we’re going to treat this investigation with the utmost priority to try to get those answers,” Akin said.

Police told FOX4 no adults were injured. The investigation is ongoing.

Edit: an earlier version of this story described the children as brother and sister. Police later corrected that information to say the children are both girls.
