EARLHAM, Iowa (AP) — A 2-year-old girl was found face-down in a ditch filled with water in rural Dallas County and pronounced dead after being rushed to a Des Moines hospital.

Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Scott Bright says Deja Ramynke was playing with two other children Wednesday morning in front of a home about five miles north of Earlham when an adult noticed her missing.

Authorities were called and an Iowa State Patrol trooper found her face-down in a watery ditch, about 100 yards from the house.

The trooper started cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and the girl was taken by helicopter to Blank Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The state medical examiner’s office will perform an autopsy.
