RAYTOWN, Mo. — Two people were hurt and several families shaken up after two separate car crashes involving six cars, one that plowed through a garage sale in Raytown.
One mother said there were seven children under the age of five at the yard sale, which was at a home near the intersection of Blue Ridge Boulevard and 74th Terrace.
“It was terrifying, absolutely terrifying.” said Jessica Williams, a mother of three.
Raytown police said the first crash happened when one car rear-ended another. Then minutes later, a blue minivan trying to either turn left or avoid the first wreck collided with a gray SUV.
That car swerved into the nearby yard sale, hitting a white SUV carrying two small children before it finally stopped when it rammed into a tree.
“My heart is still racing,” Williams said hours after the crash.
Police said the drivers of the minivan and gray SUV were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
No one else was seriously hurt, but it was a scary experience for the families who witnessed it all and barely escaped harm’s way.
“My heart was in my throat,” Williams said. “I don’t even remember what I did. I know I found myself in an SUV pulling two children out that weren’t even mine.”
Those two children belonged to Jessica Coulter, a woman who had just stopped in to shop at the yard sale and didn’t even have a chance to get her infant son and three-year-old daughter out of the car yet.
“Seeing a car flying toward your car knowing that your babies are in there, it’s just scary,” Coulter said.
The two mothers were shaken by the thought of losing those most important to them.
“They mean the world to me,” Coulter said. “They mean everything to me.”
Both were thankful and hugging their little ones a little tighter.
“Just the thought of losing the kids; that’s the scariest thing in the world for a parent,” Williams said.
