DALLAS — A Texas teen is lucky to be alive after narrowly avoiding a lightning strike while fishing on Lake Athens, a lake about an hour and a half south-east of Dallas.
Tucker Owings, 16, a professional angler, posted video of the lightning strike on his Facebook page, saying it was a “close call.”
He told KLTV he accidentally left his GoPro camera running as he and a friend were headed back to shore to take shelter from the storm.
“Out of nowhere that flash just popped right in front of the boat,” Owings said.
The blast from the bolt left him with a headache for the rest of the day. Owings said the lightning strike left his hair standing on end and he could feel the heat from the blast of electricity.
Once Owings and his friend made it to shore they beached the boat and ran to a fishing shack where they waited for the storm to pass. Once the clouds broke, Owings and his friend headed back out and continue fishing.
