NEW YORK — Superstorm Sandy roared ashore across the Atlantic coastline on Monday night, lashing huge areas with high winds, flooding storm surges and heavy rains and leaving millions without power.

This explosion happened on Monday night at a Con-Ed power plant on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, and was captured on video from across the East River in neighboring Brooklyn.
