HARVEYVILLE, Kan. — Officials say that over 400 volunteers made themselves available for clean-up work in tornado-ravaged Harveyville, and while many are expected to return on Friday, officials say that more volunteers may be needed.
According to the Wabaunsee County Emergency Management agency, people wishing to volunteer to assist in the recovery clean-up of Harveyville need to report to Mission Valley School, 12913 Mission Valley Road, Eskridge, Kan.
Volunteers will need to complete liability release forms, receive a wrist band and attend a safety briefing. Once these are completed, volunteers will be staged for transportation to Harveyville.
Volunteers will receive their work assignments at the old school in Harveyville and meet with their job site coordinator. Volunteers will be doing strenuous outdoor work. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age unless coming as part of an organized group.
It is recommended that volunteers bring gloves, sunscreen and eye protection. They should wear appropriate clothing and sturdy, comfortable work boots that will resist penetration by nails and other debris.
Buses will run back and forth to Eskridge, but all volunteer work will stop at 5 p.m. to make sure the town is cleared before dark. On Friday and Saturday, March 2 and 3, the work schedule will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the first transport leaving Eskridge at 9 a.m. On Sunday, the work schedule will be from noon to 5 p.m. with the first transport leaving at 1 p.m.
All volunteers will be working with a lead volunteer at each site.
