KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Interested in cleaning up Missouri roads? The Missouri Department of Transportation is accepting volunteers to pick up trash during the month-long “No MOre Trash! Bash.”
On Thursday, April 19, the MoDOT Kansas City District will have employees sporting orange safety vests, working along the road side picking up litter and helping to keep Missouri roads clean and safe while beautifying the area in preparation for the 2012 MLB All-Star Game in Kansas City.
Although MoDOT makes an effort to clean up the highways during the spring and summer months, April is the annual “No MOre Trash! Bash,” a month-long litter awareness campaign. The purpose is to educate about the effects that litter has on the environment while urging communities to get involved in the fight against trash on Missouri roads.
The bash is an annual event sponsored by the Missouri departments of Conservation and Transportation and celebrates its 10th Anniversary this year. During the entire month of April, efforts are aimed at getting people to clean up litter all across Missouri from roadsides, to parks, to rivers and streams.
MoDOT spends more than $5 million each year cleaning litter from Missouri’s roadsides, while Conservation spends almost $1 million a year to clean litter from conservation areas and other department locations.
Last year more than 157,000 bags of trash and many more truckloads of debris were collected during April. Volunteers included MoDOT and MDC employees, Adopt-A-Highway volunteers, Stream Team members, as well as many members of the public. Anyone can report their activity during the No MOre Trash! Bash.
