OLATHE, Kan. — Olathe Northwest sophomore Megan Campbell said she had to do something when an EF-4 tornado hit the small Arkansas town of Vilonia. Campbell’s family has friends there who lost everything so, she decided to ask her church and friends for help.
“I just really want to help out and make a difference for the people there,” said Campbell.
Vilonia is one of many cities and towns hit hard by this past week’s deadly tornado outbreak.
“I can’t imagine what it would be like if we lost our house or we lost our things, I just think it would be so hard, so I just want to help everybody that’s going through that,” said Campbell.
She decided to pattern her efforts after a very successful campaign last year to help people in Moore, Oklahoma. The effort was called “Olathe loves Oklahoma,” now it’s “Olathe loves Arkansas.” The name changed, but the response is the same.
Bins filled up quickly with clothes for men women and children. Toiletries, food, even toys for the kids. When the truck is full, it’s Arkansas bound.
“It doesn’t seem like it will actually happen when you see it on the news, see it on TV, but when it happens to someone you know it really opens your eyes to the possibilities,” said Campbell.
