KANASAS CITY, Mo. — The mild winter and warm start to spring is causing business to boom in a couple of industries. It’s also causing a “creepy” feeling for many people across the metro.

Exterminators say it’s not so much the early spring that’s led to bug problems in homes, rather, it was the non-existent winter. Outside of homes, it’s also easy to find signs of life, but it’s a good thing for people and places involved with lawn and landscape projects, at least so far.

At the Kansas City Home, Flower, Lawn and Garden Show, pest control companies drew a lot of interest from people dealing with unwelcomed guests in their homes. Terminix Inspectors say ants and termites are some of the biggest bug problems in the metro. They say one of the biggest factors is that bugs didn’t die off over the winter like they usually do.

Metro nurseries and lawn and garden stores are also seeing a flurry of activity. Some, like Soil Service in Kansas City say business in the month of March is at least double what they typically do. With the chance of a freeze still possible, experts say homeowners should be cautious with plantings involving a lot of time or money and make sure you’re able to protect them.

Without the threat of a freeze, experts say the spring season is two to three weeks ahead of schedule, so any outdoor job, planting or seeding that’s recommended to do in mid-April, you should be doing now.
