KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A special delivery from the Bayou State gives 50 dogs and cats a second chance at life, a home, and a forever family.

Wednesday, Wayside Waifs welcomed the animals into its facility to get them ready for adoption into metro-area homes.

The quiet arrival of a colorful truck began an organized frenzy of puppy kisses, tail wags, and a few frightened eyes as 50 dogs and cats were introduced to their new temporary home at Wayside Waifs.

The animals were delivered by Dustin Caldwell from the Louisiana SPCA.

“I love transporting animals out-of-state to different shelters to save more lives, instead of seeing them get euthanized, or on the street, you know?” said Caldwell.

The 13-hour trip saved these animals’ lives.

“If they were to stay there, they would not have a home, they would not be able to find a place to live the rest of their lives, they don’t have any space for them down there,” said Casey Waugh from Wayside Waifs.

So one-by-one, the animals are lovingly carried inside to be examined.

“Obviously make sure they’re healthy, we think that they’re all in good condition, but we want to make sure that our vets take a look at them, give them exams, before they become available for adoption,” Waugh explained.

Over the next week or so, the animals will get the necessary treatment, and medical and personality evaluations to ensure they’ll be safe and happy in their new, permanent homes.

Without a sad tail in sight, the long road to a happy home seems to have been worth the ride for these newest members of the Kansas City community. Wayside Waifs hopes to have these animals available for adoption next weekend- the 10th, 11th, and 12th of April.

There are 15 adult dogs, and 27 puppies, and six adult cats and two kittens that will be available for adoption.
