KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The wet weather is causing big problems for thousands of fans who traveled to Kansas Speedway on Saturday afternoon as dozens found themselves stuck in mud right before the race.
“Needing a hand?”
Tow truck driver Joseph Smalley asked that question a lot Saturday afternoon, as dozens slipped and slid their way through lots at the Kansas Speedway.
“People flag us down let us know if there is somebody out there stuck,” said Smalley, who used his mud-caked Hummer to help dig stranded cars sunk deep in the muck. “Just lookin off into the middle of the fields to see if anyone is having trouble getting around.”
Smalley works for Sante Fe Towing Company and the help is free of charge.
“Pretty grateful I was pretty much dead in the water over there. Everybody could just stare and laugh,” said driver Steven Brevelle. “I’m glad he came around so maybe I’ll actually get out of here some time today.”
FOX 4 felt Brevelle’s pain too, as our live truck got stuck. Luckily, Smalley was nearby.
“It was a lot more challenging,” said Smalley. “But kind of funny at the same time.”
That’s the mentality most drivers here are keeping.
“I come out for the fun! This is what I like doing,” Smalley said.
And the fans say what’s wrong with a little rain and mud?
“People that have drove 9 hours like us, we are staying till the end,” racing fan Bill Purington.
“What’s better than that?” added racing fan Jim Walsh said.
