KANSAS CITY, Mo.– It’s the equivalent of two to three marathons in 71 days. Ryan Chalmers is pushing his racing wheelchair from Los Angeles to New York City and after staring in April, Chalmers has reached halfway in Kansas City.

Chalmers is using the more than 3,000 mile ride to motivate and encourage those with physical disabilities to never give up and always push yourself to achieve goals.  The 24 year-old athlete, was born with Spina Bifida and has never had full use of his legs, but that hasn’t stopped him yet.

“You just got to push through those days where your legs or your arms are hurting to get through each day slowly,” said Chalmers.

It’s the first time anything like this has ever been attempted in a racing wheelchair. The goal of the cross country ride is to bring attention to the organization, Stay Focused, a nonprofit group that works with teens and adults with physical disabilities.

“It has made such an impact in my life and I knew right away I wanted to be able to make a difference,” said Chalmers. “This is perfect way to do that because I’m able to put my passion of wheelchair racing and my passion of the organization together to be able to make that difference.”

Last year Chalmers competed on the U.S. Paralympic team in London and he plans to do the same in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil,
