KANSAS CITY, Mo. — According to neighbors, Robin Lindsey was moving into her mother’s home after several weeks of someone breaking into her house and stealing from her. She packed up what was left of her things to move out of a neighborhood that she was sick of.
“All of a sudden, the car in front of me swerves out and around real hard, and I see just debris just exploding all over the road,” said one witness, Robert Sprague.
Around 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sprague was headed north on I-29 near the Mexico City Avenue exit. He said it was extremely windy and he swerved to avoid the debris flying at him.
The debris he was ducking belonged to Lindsey, flying out of the back of her pickup truck. Sprague said Lindsey stopped and tried to salvage what she could.
“She was real sad, real frantic,” Sprague added.
So he went to help her. He found things like a wheelbarrow and a chair that severely damaged his car and one other person’s.
“I didn’t see her when I went to go back to cross the road, I didn’t notice her in the median with me,” Sprague said, “We were all standing there, talking, wondering where she went.”
After about 30 minutes, a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper came over to tell them that 51-year-old Lindsey had been hit by a car and killed on impact.
“I wanted to cry,” said Sprague.
Britt Carpenter had been one of Lindsey’s neighbors.
“She’s been awesome, I mean, I’ve helped her, she’s helped me, she’s going to be missed,” he said.
A mutual friend called him to tell him news.
“I was shocked, I just talked to her the night before,” Carpenter said, “She was moving some of her things up to her mom’s. When she was gone, I kept an eye on the house, and basically, someone went into it again and cleaned her out kind of.”
Lindsey leaves behind a son who is in the military. The driver who struck her stopped immediately and called police. He was released pending further investigation.
