KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City woman faces 49 charges for allegedly trying to defraud the FOX 4 Love Fund.
Court documents say Katie Pope, 32, applied to the Love Fund for assistance on behalf of her employer, a United Way agency working in the field of mental health.
When the requests became excessive, Love Fund officials say they discovered Pope had been fired shortly after the first requests had been made.
Prosecutors say Pope received more than $11,000 in K-mart vouchers.
The Love Fund was established nearly 30 years ago to fund service for children when other funding sources are not available.
Love Fund officers say they have taken further steps to verify the legitimacy of applicants.
