KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A metro boy’s plea has Mayor Sly James in weighing in on his request. He’s 10 years old and lost his younger brother and a cousin in a high-profile drive by shooting two months ago. He says it’s changed his life forever, now he’s asking for help.
Thursday marks two months since 8-year-old Montell Ross was shot and killed. Still, no arrests have been made in his case. His 10-year-old brother grabbed a pencil and piece of paper, hoping to make a change.
In the letter, 10-year-old Montrail writes in honor of his brother. It says, “Dear Mayor Sly James, can you make the world a better place? Can you stop the gun shooting, take the people away who shoot other people so nobody will die? Then kids will live their future and will have a good life because people keep doing drivebys. The 5th grader went on to say, “Make the world a better place, stop the violence.”
We spoke with Mayor James about the letter. He says it’s heartbreaking that this little boy is facing this pain and will do all he can to help him.
“Think about it from that kid’s perspective. To lose a brother like that. And not know why. That’s gonna stick with him for the rest of his life. It’s something that didn’t necessarily have to happen,” Mayor James said.
Eight-year-old Montell was shot and killed while inside his home with family in August, when bullets came flying inside. Montell’s 9-year-old cousin Jayden was also shot and killed.
