KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Someone out there is getting away with murder. On Friday night, a three-year-old would’ve been six, and her family is still left wondering who killed her and the girl’s mom.
Damiah White and her mom, Myeisha Turner, were found shot to death inside their home back in 2013. Turner’s young son was left at the scene unharmed.
Damiah’s family remembered the girl with a birthday party in Blue Hills Park on Friday. The gathering commemorated Damiah’s life, and those attending also hoped to raise awareness for the unsolved murders.
“It has been very painful and I miss them so much. And I am beginning to get angry cause it has not been solved,” Cheryl Turner explained. Damiah was her granddaughter, and Myeisha was her daughter.
According to Turner, KC Mayor Sly James said a park pavilion painted pink in Damiah’s memory would remain that way until the case was solved. But Friday, as family arrived to the park, they found a different scene.
“We get here and find that it has been painted blue and that is very upsetting. It was shocking. I just pulled over and my mouth was just open. I was in shock,” Turner said.
In August of 2013, Turner said Myeisha did not show up at St. Luke’s hospital, where she worked as a caregiver. Her cousin went by her home at 55th and Wabash Avenue, found the back door wide open, Myeisha and Damiah were dead, and Myeisha’s one-year-old son was crawling around the room where their lifeless bodies lay.
“I want this case to be solved, their murders need to be solved. They deserve justice,” Turner said.
Some in the community say members of the Turner family knows whose responsible for the murders, but fear retaliation for talking to the police.
“If anyone in my family knew something they would come forward,” Turner told FOX 4’s Shannon O’Brien.
“Even if they were afraid of the people who might have done it?” O’Brien asked.
“Yes! Yes. In my heart I have to believe that,” Turner said.
FOX 4 reached out to Mayor James and to the KCMO Parks and Recreation Department to get the family some answers about why the pavilion is now blue, and have not heard back.
