KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Officials at the Kansas City Zoo are reviewing their procedures after a pair of gorillas managed to briefly escape out of their habitat over the weekend.
According to zoo officials, the gorillas managed to get into a non-public hallway behind their habitat on Sunday afternoon. Officials say that the public was never in danger, but the zoo enacted a “Code Red” procedure, and zoo visitors were placed in “safe buildings” and the Africa section was evacuated until the gorillas were placed back in their habitat.
On Monday, officials met to review their safety procedures, including determining how the 400-pound animals were able to escape.
Zoo Back to Normal Following Escape
The zoo has six lowland gorillas in total. The incident on Sunday was the first “Code Red” at the zoo since 2004, when a group of chimpanzees managed to briefly escape after a tree fell across the perimeter wall of their enclosure.
