As I pulled into the gravel driveway to ask permission to take pictures of "The Royals Barn", the fall themed wreath on the front door welcomed me as I put the car into park. Upon opening the car door, the fresh smell of bonfire smoke wafted right into my soul making me wish I could pull up a hay bale, grab a strong cup of coffee and stay for a while. The owner approached me, curious I'm sure as to why I'd show up at the crack of dawn. He was still in his bathrobe and had bed head, but made no apologies and I didn't care. (country people aren't superficial like that) His morning hello was nothing short of kind, gracious, and proud that I'd even ask to capture what I described as "the most patriotic symbol of rural America". After brief introductions, he not only gave me full permission to take a picture, but to post it and submit it to local media, but didn't let me leave without inviting me back to watch the game tonight which he is projecting on the side of the barn and has been doing so the entire series. "It gets a little rowdy after a few innings", he said with a smirk. I smiled back at him as I peered over his shoulder and noted the pile of empty beer bottles from last nights game. But that's how it is in Rural America..strangers are welcome, (come as you are), bring a dish to share, and enjoy a game while warming your hands by the bonfire. God, country, family...but right up there these days is the ROYALS.
