WACO, Texas. — What started as a battle turned into a rout in the second half, as the Baylor Bears pummeled the Kansas Jayhawks 41-14 on Saturday afternoon at Floyd Casey Stadium.
Baylor (4-4, 1-4 Big 12) opened the game with an 84-yard drive, and took a 7-0 lead on an 11-yd touchdown pass from senior quarterback Nick Florence to senior wide receiver Terrance Williams.
Both teams exchanged big plays that lit up the scoreboard early on. On Baylor’s next possession, Florence unleashed a 68-yard TD pass to sophomore running back Lache Seastrunk to give the Bears a 14-0 lead. Jayhawks junior RB James Sims got loose for a 59-yd TD run to cut the deficit to 14-7.
The Bears took a 17-7 lead into the second quarter.
Kansas (1-8, 0-6 Big 12) went on an 81-yd drive before halftime, capped with a 22-yd rushing TD by freshman QB Michael Cummings. Baylor took a 20-14 lead into the half.
After an hour-long weather delay at halftime, the Bears caught fire, and eventually gave the Hawks no chance at a comeback. Sophomore QB Bryce Petty added a 1-yd TD run, and Florence added a 7-yd TD run to give Baylor a 34-14 lead at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth, Florence found junior WR Tevin Reese for a 40-yd TD pass to put the Bears up 41-14.
Baylor outgained Kansas in total yards 667-343.
Florence completed 26 of 42 for 367 yards passing with three TD’s. Cummings completed 8 of 18 for 78 yards and two interceptions. He also had four carries for 23 yards and a TD.
Next Saturday, the Jayhawks travel to Lubbock, Texas to take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
