OAKLAND — In one of the worst offensive performances in recent history, the Kansas City Chiefs fell 15-0 to the Oakland Raiders at O.co Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.
The Chiefs (2-12, 1-6 away) turned in their most stagnant offensive performance of the season, as their first seven possessions resulted in seven 3 and outs.
It was all defense early on, and the Raiders (4-10, 3-5 home) drew first blood with a 20-yard field goal by kicker Sebastian Janikowski, who put on a kicking clinic for the rest of the afternoon.
In the second quarter, Chiefs quarterback Brady Quinn threw an interception near midfield. That setup a 50-yd FG by Janikowski to give Oakland a 6-0 lead. Janikowski hit a 57-yd FG before halftime to push the lead to 9-0 at the break.
Oakland gained a total of 198 yards in the first half, while the Chiefs gained just 17. Running back Jamaal Charles had three carries for -2 yards.
Janikowski hit a 30-yd FG in the third quarter, and a 41-yd FG in the fourth to extend Oakland’s lead to 15-0. The Raiders’ defense finished the game with four sacks.
With 6:41 left in the third quarter, the Chiefs embarked on a 71-yd drive, thanks in part to 47 yards of penalties on the Raiders. The drive resulted in a turnover on downs at Oakland’s nine yard line. Kansas City recovered a fumble at Oakland’s 20-yd line with 10:30 to play in the fourth, but only gained two yards on the ensuing drive, resulting in another turnover on downs.
The Raiders outgained the Chiefs in total yards, 385 to 119. They also dominated time of possession, over 40 minutes worth, while the Chiefs had the ball for just under 20 minutes.
The Chiefs finished with just 10 yards rushing in their first shutout loss in over two years. In December of 2010, QB Brodie Croyle got the start in the Chiefs’ 31-0 loss to the Chargers in San Diego.
The Chiefs host rookie QB Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts next Sunday in their final home game at Arrowhead Stadium.
