ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs had another morning of cooler weather their 2nd day of training camp. So far, coach Andy Reid was very impressed with Missouri Western’s facilities.
“I think they’ve done a great job. I appreciate the hospitality. Everything.” Reid said. “The grounds crew obviously did a great job with the grass. It’s a great setup. If you’re a fan you can come out and watch. If you’re a player you can come out here and practice. It’s a great setup.”
Although the weather and facilities have been in Reid’s favor these past few days, he is most concerned with the way his rookies, selected veterans, and quarterbacks have been performing in practice.
“The young guys get another rep at what they’re doing. It’s a slower pace for them, but there’s still enough plays in there to challenge them. It gives them a jump start. We’ll go through the same plays when the veterans come in. Their first night here will be the first night of veteran camp.” Reid said.
Offensively, the team portions of these first two days of camp have been all passing plays. This morning quarterback Alex Smith connected with rookie tight end Travis Kelce on several plays.
“I think it’s an advantage to every position group when you have guys that have done this before and been through this situation before, it’s definitely an advantage to everyone. They’re out there helping every position group get to where they need to be and do what they need to do.” Kelce said.
Kelce wasn’t Smith’s only target for the day. Smith also launched a great pass to wide receiver Donnie Avery to score during seven on seven drills.
The rest of the veterans are scheduled to arrive on Thursday afternoon. The first full-squad practice will be on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Friday’s practice is the first practice open to the public with a $5 admission fee.
